My Toilet Is Clogged Again
Last night I was blowing my nose and just flushed the tissue without thinking. Today the toilet filled up to the rim and would not flush properly. My roommate said I probably clogged it with the tissue. I am worried it will happen again and cause a bigger mess. Can someone recommend a guide on risks of tissue clogs, how tissues clog pipes, what damage it can cause, how to prevent it? I want to understand why this happened so I do not make the same mistake again.

Oh man I totally get this. I did the exact same thing a few months ago and ended up with a toilet overflowing all over my bathroom floor. It was a huge mess and I was so embarrassed. The problem is tissues are made to stay strong when wet unlike toilet paper which dissolves quickly. When you flush tissue it does not break down and just sits there blocking the water flow. Over time more stuff builds up around it and you get a serious clog. I found this really helpful article that explains the risks of tissue clogs, how tissues clog pipes, what damage it can cause, how to prevent it at can you flush tissues down the toilet safely . It broke down exactly why tissues are different from toilet paper and what happens inside your pipes. The biggest thing I learned is that even one tissue can cause a clog if your pipes are narrow or old. Now I always throw tissues in the trash bin instead. Keep a small trash can next to the toilet and it becomes a habit. Trust me it is way easier than dealing with a clogged toilet.
